Pawleys Island South Carolina is a barrier island located in Georgetown County approximately 22 miles south of Myrtle Beach and 70 miles north of Charleston, South Carolina. It’s a small, laid-back beach community with a permanent population of only around 200, but that number swells in the summer when thousands of part-time residents and visitors come to spend time on the island. Pawleys Island is less than four miles long and separated from the mainland by a beautiful salt marsh and two short causeways. It has a rich history, and is known as one of the oldest summer resort areas in the country. Settled in the early 1700s by rich, rice plantation owners, Pawleys Island became a “summer retreat” for the planters, who wanted to spend their summers near the sea. Several of these historic summer cottages are still in existence on the island today. Locals like to call their island “arrogantly shabby,” and many visitors claim “their blood pressure goes down when they cross the causeway.” You will, no doubt, agree when you see Pawley Islands’ miles of sandy white beaches, wildlife preserves and pristine communities. Life is easy here, casual and unsophisticated. The Waccamaw River, which is a part of the Intracoastal Waterway, is located here, as well as the beautiful and famous Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park. There are eight golf courses located in the community and miles of walking and biking trails designed for the whole family to enjoy. Across the causeway, on the mainland, you will find all you need in the way of grocery stores, fast food, fine dining, boutiques and other shopping. The Myrtle Beach International Airport is within 25 to 30 minutes of Pawleys Island.

Summers are busy and residential rental homes and beachside cottages and condo rentals fill up fast on Pawleys Island. For those looking to make a permanent move, single family homes run in the $150,000 - $1,700,000 range. Condominiums are between $89,000 - $725,000. The community consists mainly of permanent residents and vacation homeowners. The price of a property is determined mostly by its’ location to the beaches and golfing communities. This region of South Carolina is referred to as the “Low Country” and along with Pawleys Island it contains the following cities; Georgetown, Myrtle Beach, Isle of Palms, Charleston, Kiawah Island, Beaufort and Hilton Head Island. Georgetown is the closest to Pawleys Island – just twelve miles south of town and offers a larger selection of real estate. Gated communities, single-family homes and homesites are available in the Georgetown area. Some of the gated communities are located on the site of former historic rice plantations, along scenic rivers, private beaches or golf courses, and while they all offer different amenities, they are all designed to help preserve the natural beauty of the area. Many Georgetown homes are listed on the National Historic Register and history buffs can have a rare opportunity to own an antebellum home and help preserve the history of the South Carolina coastal area.
